Frequently Asked Questions
Product FAQs
How do I select a blade for my microtome or cryostat?
Many factors affect which blade is best in your application: tissue type, FFPE or fresh-frozen tissue, and the type of paraffin or frozen embedding media used. If your lab processes a variety of different sample types, consider a blade that performs well in across many different tissue types and applications.
Which Epredia blade is best for hard tissue?
The MX35 Ultra+ blade maintains high quality sections in hard tissue 59% longer than the MX35 Ultra blade, based on internal testing. The Ultra+ blade includes a two-layer extra-hard PTFE layer designed for outstanding longevity.
Why are blade coatings important?
Microtome and cryostat blade coatings are designed to help produce clean sections with few artifacts and reliable ribboning. Epredia offers a variety of blade coatings for a range of applications. The MX35 Ultra+ blade includes a two-layer coating with an extra-hard PTFE layer designed for durability. Other blades include hard PTFE or soft PTFE coatings.
How do Epredia blades contribute to safe handling?
Histotechs can avoid touching the blade during loading with direct blade loading into Epredia microtome E disposable blade holders when indicated. Epredia offers a blade removal tool for removing the blade without touching it, and the cartridge includes built-in disposal for used blades.
How can Epredia blades meet my lab’s specific needs?
Epredia offers a range of blade options, including low-profile blades and high-profile blades and a variety of PTFE coating options for performance and durability. Most Epredia blades offer a 34° blade angle for precise ribboning, but a 22° angle blade is also available to facilitate extra-thin sections.
Can Epredia blades be used with microtomes and cryostats from other manufacturers?
Epredia microtome blades are compatible with most manufacturers’ microtomes and cryostats.
